Our Unheard Voices

We all hear stories today about ‘rebellious’ teenagers causing anti- social behaviour. But who can blame them with todays government. Annual statistics show that last year 8.1% of 16-18 year olds were not in any work or education. This has risen form 7.5% in 2010. What exactly have the government done to combat this problem and help us teenagers? Nothing. What assistance has the government provided to support the youth of today other than cut education funding, employment training, youth clubs and sport facilities?

Teenagers were promised a bright future from the government, the so called ‘ a new beginning’. The government made promises to assist teenagers into higher education, more jobs opportunites and training however today we cant afford to get into higher education at University because Tuition fees have increased. Most of us are born into average working class families and are financially incapable of even coming up with the money to help better ourselves. How is it fair to let us suffer just because we are not wealthy enough to afford fees? If the government say that there is a chance for everybody to make a change for their future then how is this possible for those who are struggling to even round up money for food and shelter never mind education. The increasing of these costs are intolerable and unsatisfactory. We, as the younger generation aim to be the best we can possibly be and we need a government that will guide and fight for us every step of the way. The government defended themselves by saying that universities need the money to run and maintain the place. Yes, we understand that universities need the money to pay for lecturers, facilities, building and learning equipment. However if £9000 is the price we are expected to pay to attend a university then the government are ‘stupid and ‘unrealistic’ to even believe more youths will actually do so.

Its not just about the money though, the entire process of higher education is overwhelming and many new students have no idea how to get started or what they should consider. The government are lacking in responsibility when it comes to giving us a kickstart in adult life. We don’t really know all the options available and what to do in the long run. Max, 18 says, ” Im now 18 and i need to get thinking seriously about my future and what i want to happen, but i don’t really know whether university is right for me, or if there is any job opportunites as currently there are more than a million under-25s unemployed in Britain”.
There are too many teenagers giving up and quitting just because they cant consider all of the positions. The government are not offering the essential help required to ensure that every young person has the ability to get support whenever they need it! He makes a good point that “the school with the lowest price may not even be the best deal. If the “more expensive” school offers more financial aid it may end up being cheaper in the long run”.

Around the UK there are millions of us teenagers who are angry, scared and worried about our future. What will happen to us? The older generation have ruined it for us in this economic climate and now a great amount of us young people are left apprehensive about what the future will hold for us. Will it change? Will it get better? We have no hope, no hope in this society to make it. To make a change, To make a difference. The government have thrown us to the end of the pile because we don’t currently provide any benefits, its the rich upper class citizens who appear to be getting all the support. This is what resulted in the london riots last year 2012 where thousands of our youths decided they could not stand back anymore and needed the government to see that they are serious. We know what they did was wrong but the message they were trying to give was important and vital for the government to understand what us youths want to change.

There are not enough opportunities out there for us teenagers to allow us the chance to make a change. We deserve it more than anyone in the country. What the government needs to understand is we are the next generation ; we are the future doctors, police officers, teachers and the future Alan Sugars. We demand to be heard!
